Yesterday, NASA has experienced a supersonic parachute identified by the acronym LDSD’ Low Density Supersonic Decelerator ‘: it is a device much larger than those currently used and will be used mainly for the shipment of Mars, at the center of a lot ‘of time after sending Curiosity on the planet.

30.5 meters long and combined with two similar devices to diski flying, LDSD is equipped, of course, also of the classic ball parachute, the dimensions of which, however, are entirely different from those of a normal parachute. LDSD was launched, think, up to 55 kilometers up to Mach 4 (four times the speed of sound): the aim was to simulate a fall in the Martian atmosphere, reproduced by the conditions that are found at 55 Kilo-metres height on the ground.
The result? Said positive: everything worked until the beginning of the landing phase, since then the parachute did not open properly; This, however, did not prevent him to land at 23.40 on Italian soil, allowing scientists to discover all errors to be corrected and the merits of this new technology.
